APP Foodservice Packaging, the dedicated custom packaging division under APP China (Sinar Mas Group), today unveiled its outstanding water conservation performance featured in the newly released APP China 2025 Water Resources Report. Our comprehensive water management system sets industry benchmarks, enabling us to supply eco-friendly, regulatory-compliant packaging to cross-border food merchants and global retail partners worldwide.
Rooted in APP Group’s core sustainability vision “Using Water with Efficiency, Conserving the Source of Life”, APP Foodservice Packaging manages water resources across the full industrial value chain — from sustainable forest plantations to finished packaging production, solving water consumption and pollution risks while bringing tangible ESG value to international brand clients.

Supported by APP’s Ningbo manufacturing hub, our packaging production lines have deployed a full portfolio of water-saving technical renovations, achieving an overall industrial water reuse rate over 95% in 2024, far exceeding national papermaking industry standards.
Core water-saving technologies applied in our facility:
1. Classified graded water supply & white water closed circulation system: Recycled vacuum pump cooling water and condensate replace fresh clarified water for printing, coating and forming procedures, cutting annual freshwater intake by 733,400 cubic meters in 2024 alone.
2. Intelligent automated high-pressure cleaning: Upgraded continuous manual washing to intermittent auto-control cycles to eliminate unnecessary water waste during mold and plate cleaning.
3. MBR advanced wastewater deep treatment: Post-process discharged water to production-grade standards for repeated use in raw material dilution and workshop cleaning, lowering reliance on external freshwater sources.
4. 24/7 real-time water quality monitoring: Online sensors track COD, ammonia nitrogen and suspended solids, with data synchronized to local environmental supervision platforms. A multi-level early warning system ensures wastewater discharge stays far below GB 3544 national limits all year round.
Our outstanding water governance was officially recognized as a Zhejiang Provincial Water-Saving Benchmark Enterprise back in 2021, granting a 50% water resource fee exemption from 2022 to 2024 with total savings of RMB 4.6 million. In 2025, we were listed on Zhejiang’s advanced industrial water quota enterprise roster, qualifying for an extra 20% water tax reduction worth approximately RMB 780,000. All cost savings from efficient water management are passed on to global buyers via more competitive pricing for sustainable packaging lines.
Unlike independent packaging manufacturers without upstream raw material control, APP Foodservice Packaging benefits from APP’s complete integrated forest-pulp-paper system, building an end-to-end water protection loop from plantation to finished boxes and bags.
APP operates 22 professional forestry bases nationwide with strict scientific cultivation protocols to eliminate watershed contamination risks: drought-resistant seed varieties, contour strip tillage, reserved native vegetation buffer belts alongside rivers and ditches, plus a total ban on prohibited pesticides and herbicides. Long-term multi-year monitoring across Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan and Yunnan eucalyptus plantations verifies zero water resource depletion or eutrophication incidents, supported by regional annual rainfall all above 800mm to maintain balanced local hydrology.
All food-grade paperboard used by APP Foodservice Packaging is self-manufactured at APP’s self-owned pulp mills equipped with premium VOITH production equipment. Group-wide unified water balance testing, company-wide water-saving training and standardized wastewater treatment systems guarantee stable low water intensity for every batch of packaging substrate, removing quality fluctuations caused by third-party paper suppliers.
APP Foodservice Packaging’s water stewardship strengths deliver unique selling points for overseas supermarket chains, DTC snack brands and bakery merchants with strict ESG and green shelf requirements:

Looking ahead, APP Foodservice Packaging will continue rolling out phased water-saving facility upgrades, expand rainwater collection and reuse capacity, and participate in drafting national green packaging standards alongside APP China. Our clear target is to lift the group packaging division’s water reuse rate above 96% by 2027, further lowering unit product water withdrawal and delivering accessible, low-impact sustainable packaging to partners of all sizes worldwide.
“Water conservation runs through every link of our raw material supply, packaging design and mass production,” said the Operations Lead of APP Foodservice Packaging. “By leveraging APP’s full circular industrial chain and mature water treatment technologies, we support global food brands to balance attractive unboxing marketing, long-term food freshness protection and consistent environmental accountability, making certified sustainable packaging available for every cross-border retail business.”
