APP Foodservice Packaging Expands Sustainable Foodservice Packaging Portfolio, Backed by APP Group's 2024 ESG Milestones

PFAS-free, compostable and recyclable food-grade packaging solutions reinforce the group's commitment to a green, low-carbon circular economy

APP Foodservice Packaging, the dedicated foodservice packaging business within the APP (Asia Pulp & Paper) family, today announced the expansion of its sustainable foodservice packaging portfolio, underpinned by the environmental milestones disclosed in APP China's 2024 Sustainability/ESG Report.
The announcement follows APP China's release of its 18th annual sustainability report, which confirms steady progress toward the group's “dual carbon” goals of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. In 2024, APP China invested RMB 1.536 billion, approximately USD 212 million, in environmental protection — up 14.53% year-on-year — with renewable energy reaching 24.73% of its energy mix and industrial water reuse averaging 95.19%.

Innovation in Food-Grade, Plastic-Free Packaging

Central to the group's green product strategy is a 100% fluorine-free, PFAS-free oil-proof food-grade board — a next-generation material for foodservice applications such as plates, bowls, trays and takeaway containers. Made from 100% virgin pulp and free from perfluoro and polyfluoroalkyl substances, the material is fully biodegradable, compostable, recyclable and re-pulpable, and has obtained international certifications including PEFC Forest

Management certification, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and FDA certification.

The group has also commercialized a range of complementary green solutions for the foodservice industry:

• Zero-plastic, zero-carbon and biodegradable product series: Under the “Breeze Commercial” brand, this series is developed for business customers seeking professional green solutions. It includes PLA, or polylactic acid, biodegradable film packaging that is 100% compostable, decomposing without toxic or harmful residues — an innovation that can reduce plastic use by 10–20 tons per year.
• A zero-carbon recycling paper cup initiative: The “Zero-Carbon Recycling Paper Cup Pioneer Alliance,” launched together with industry peers under the slogan “Small Cup, Big Future,” aims to build a circular industry chain covering the production, use, recycling and regeneration of disposable paper cups.

The expanded portfolio also gives procurement teams clearer choices across hot drinks, cold beverages, takeaway meals and delivery occasions. By combining certified fiber sourcing, food-contact compliance and end-of-life options, APP Foodservice Packaging helps brands reduce plastic dependence while maintaining the strength, printability and converting performance required in high-volume foodservice operations.

R&D Driving “Paper for Plastic” Substitution

Continued R&D investment — RMB 2.649 billion, approximately USD 365 million, across the group in 2024 — is accelerating the replacement of plastic in everyday packaging. Gold East Paper, one of the group's flagship mills, has developed five “Paper for Plastic” product categories, including food-grade white kraft paper and plastic-free release base paper, all aimed at replacing traditional plastic and aluminum-based materials.
In liquid food packaging, Bohui Paper has achieved a core technological breakthrough in aseptic liquid packaging paper, investing over RMB 40 million, approximately USD 5.5 million, in an intelligent upgrade of its PM1 production line. The resulting sterile-grade paper — high-strength, lightweight, waterproof, impermeable and antibacterial — has been in commercial production since May 2023 and now serves global liquid packaging markets.

Responsible Sourcing from the Forest to the Table

Every APP Foodservice Packaging product traces back to a responsibly managed supply chain. APP China owns 293,107.89 hectares of fast-growing plantations, of which 93.77% are CFCC/PEFC-FM certified, and 100% of the raw wood supplied to its pulp mills is certified — ensuring full traceability from sustainable forest to finished foodservice packaging.
“Consumers and foodservice operators are increasingly choosing packaging that performs without compromising the planet,” said a spokesperson for APP Foodservice Packaging. “As part of the APP group, we bring the full strength of our parent company's certified plantations, green manufacturing and award-winning R&D to every cup, container and tray we produce. Our goal is simple: foodservice packaging that is safe for food, kind to nature, and ready for the circular economy.”
